Pruning Shadows

This spring brought with it the Great Pruning of 2023. Our weeping willow has needed help for quite a few years. The amount of gnarly dead limbs detracted from its majestic beauty. The willow's wide breadth was putting pressure on the base as well. The last thing I want is for the trunk to split from the weight of its heavy, far-reaching limbs.

I should preface the rest of the story with the fact that I'm very sentimental when it comes to this tree. My siblings and I still recall the day our mom brought home a branch from a friend's willow tree and started its roots in a jar of water. That seems like ages ago. Today, the tree stands tall and stately. Mom planted her little tree in the perfect spot. During summer's hottest days, it renders shade to the west side of the house as well as the backyard. Our willow has also provided years of childhood wonder for kids who love to climb and explore. The tree's young branches have been harvested as sticks for roasting marshmallows, as well as for swordplay and other activities. Our weeping willow has indeed served as a "Giving Tree."

So, back to the pruning. With a tree-trimming professional moving about the tree in a man-carrying bucket, the dead limbs began to fall like snow. The bucket truck made it look easy. Forget ladders and telescoping pole saws; this was like watching an artist sculpt. After removing all the dead limbs, it was time for a more precise surgery. A seasoned tree trimmer returned from the garden's orchard and eyed the tree's lofty crown. The removal of some live limbs was necessary to reduce more of the weight. By the end of the day, the pruning process transformed our mature willow into a stronger version of itself. The mountain of branches on the ground would be a project for the following day.

Thankfully, many hands make light work.

The morning after cleanup, I stood on the lawn and observed the fruits of a productive week. The magic hour of sunrise captured the tree perfectly. The willow's regal shape cast its long shadow across the field. My mind turned to thoughts of my own life and the pruning experiences I’d undergone. Although challenging, I, too, feel stronger, wiser, and more able to handle the storms thrown at me. The pruning process comes to us all. How we handle the difficulties, disappointments, and tragedies will reflect the strength of who we become and the shadows we cast.
